Natalia Landowska

Natalia Landowska is a Polish artist and designer based in New York. With a formal background in architecture, her design practice has been from the very beginning evolving towards ultimate creative freedom and outputs unconstrained by norms and expectations.

In ceramics Natalia toys with beauty of the weird, imperfect and chaotic. She experiments with porcelain formula to build surprisingly thin and lightweight shells, often allowing serendipity of kiln firing to alter the form. Glazes are layered and elaborate, they show their true nature when light comes on - soft glow amplifies textures, shadows play a role equally important as highlights.

The Pink series of wall sconces is a study on our understanding of the girly and feminine and associated stereotypes of cuteness and tackiness, a contemplation on vulnerability and complexity of being a woman. Natalia’s ceramic lamps impress from a distance, but their true nature is revealed in close examination - and in actuality it is blisters, scars, cracks and peeling layers that are the factors of attraction.
