REM Atelier
REM Atelier is a collaborative art and design project that started in 2015. The objects and installations created by artist Remty Elenga and designer Remco van Halderen oftentimes are an investigation into functionality and decor. Based in Rotterdam, the name REM Atelier represents the first shared letters of their names and, more symbolically, the melting together of their practice and life
First sharing a studio space in Rotterdam, which marked the beginning of their collaboration, did not only serve as a space to work.
Transforming into a place to host to several big-scale interactive installations, into a work of art itself, exploring spatial boundaries and meanings.
An investigation of everyday objects, playfulness, and spatial awareness characterize the work of REM Atelier.
Never merely to decorate a space, rather to create an alternate space, subjecting the surroundings to the artwork.

The Surfaced Cabinet blends different material characteristics within one functional sculpture. Ceramic tiles shape the front surface of the cabinet, merging together as one organic relief that seems a living structure set into stone. Every tile has its unique footprint and comes out of a different mold, creating a variety in shape and depth like a rhythm of fossils. The wooden foot is built up out of small vertical strokes of veneer that follow the natural lines of the wood. The lines in the wood and the wavy surface of the ceramic tiles bring a graphic sense to the piece which is loosely inspired by shapes you can find in nature when different organic substances come together and surprisingly take form as a sculpture in itself.

In this design shape, structure and contrast become even more visible caused by the special green and ox- idized type of glaze that runs through the structure of the ceramic relief. Like water flows through the cracks and depths it finds in nature in earth, wood and stone. The three dimensional aspect of the tiles in combi- nation with the flow of the glaze provokes a sense of life within the piece and displays an organic process frozen in time, reflecting on its own transitory state.
The tiles are made out of casts of melon fruit that lose their shape as time goes by. Leaving its skin bumped and dent.

SHIFTING FORMS is a playful and thought-provoking exploration of materiality, reimagining form and function in unexpected ways. The ceramic blocks in this sculpture are reproductions of the original plaster molds that REM Atelier used for their Surfaced Cabinet Tile, which was cast from a melon. By casting the fruit, the texture of the melon’s skin is extracted, removed from its original form and purpose. What remains is a texture that evokes a sense of life, growth, and transience. Much like in nature, where one shape organically evolves from another, these forms reflect the ongoing cycle of transformation.
Shifting Forms consists of no less than 600 handmade ceramic tiles, treated with six different glazes and carefully fired at different temperatures. With their refined precision, the tiles are a negative of our previous design and offer a playful and unexpected reinterpretation of both form and function. This multi-functional piece of furniture can serve as a bookshelf and consists of eight separate modules that seamlessly blend together. But each element also stands alone as a functional object, available separately and remarkable in its simplicity and sophistication.
