The hand sculpted wooden form is skinned in red leather. Strategically sliced at the seat and back planes and supported with bent steel tube, the abstract, organic shape becomes a chair. The name 'Internal Chair' comes from the form which, particularly when encased in its tight leather skin, recalls an internal organ, floating in the body of our world. J McDonald likes to think of our environment as a body, the furniture and design are its organs, its blood, its life. But as with most of my titles, there are multiple meanings intended. The artist also thinks of the chair as a place for introspection, to dwell internally for a time. Seated, though we cannot see it, we feel the mass behind and underneath us, creating a new awareness of space and body.
